Herzogenaurach – In a major move approved by the Antitrust Commission, the Schaeffler Group finalized the acquisition of Raybestos, a leading manufacturer of clutch friction discs, on February 29, 2008. The deal was announced in late January, with Rebesto, the global leader in clutch friction lining, being acquired. This strategic purchase strengthens Schaeffler’s position in friction technology and expands its product portfolio, opening up new avenues for growth and innovation.
Notably, the acquisition includes Raybestos Industrieprodukte GmbH in Morbach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, as well as Raybestos Friction Products Ltd. in Suzhou, China. Both companies are subsidiaries of American Ray-tech Corporation and employ around 550 people worldwide. In fiscal year 2007, they generated approximately 50 million euros in revenue. The transaction also involves the transfer of all employees, including managing director Alfred Klee.
This move comes at a time when LuK, Schaeffler’s renowned clutch brand, has been driving advancements in clutch technology, particularly in dry dual-clutch systems and traditional automatic transmissions. With rising engine power and growing demand for friction materials, these innovations offer significant fuel savings—up to two digits in percentage points.
LuK is one of the top clutch brands globally, with a quarter of the world’s vehicles equipped with its clutches. Its products, along with those of Rebesto, are used by many major automotive manufacturers. As a global leader in automotive components and rolling bearings, Schaeffler operates through 180 branches across 50 countries. In fiscal 2007, the company achieved total sales of 8.9 billion euros, underscoring its strong market presence and continued expansion.
