Kobelco Motors began production of speed detectors for China Shinkansen in China

Japan's Kobelco Motors has started manufacturing speed detectors for China's high-speed rail systems, incorporating technology from Japan's Shinkansen network, through a joint venture in China. These devices play a crucial role in transmitting critical data like train speed to control systems. Previously manufactured in Japan, the production has now been localized in response to China's demand for domestic manufacturing, albeit at a higher cost. The production is managed by Tianjin Kobelco Electric, a joint venture between Kobelco and Chinese machinery manufacturers. Initially, the components were produced at Ise Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in Mie Prefecture, Japan. However, through technology transfer and on-site production guidance, the joint venture has now taken over the manufacturing process. The facility currently produces 40 units per month, with plans to double that capacity to 80 units within a year. Additionally, the company aims to increase the local sourcing of parts to further support the localization initiative. The speed detector is installed on the train’s axle and uses voltage changes caused by axle rotation to measure and relay the train's speed. This information is then sent to the automatic train control (ATC) system and the brake control unit, helping to reduce wear on the tracks caused by unnecessary braking or idling. Each high-speed train is typically equipped with between 8 and 20 such detectors, ensuring accurate and real-time speed monitoring for safe and efficient operations.
