The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games marked a significant step in promoting sustainable practices, particularly through the widespread use of biodegradable plastics. This initiative was strongly supported by the 2007 Green Materials Green Olympics International Conference held in Beijing from October 27 to 28, where experts and officials reached a consensus on integrating eco-friendly materials into the event. The conference emphasized the importance of the Green Olympics concept, aiming to minimize environmental impact while hosting one of the world's largest sporting events.
Yang Yichun, Director of the Science and Technology Committee for the 29th Olympic Games and Head of the Technical Department of the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee, highlighted the collaboration between the Beijing Olympic Committee and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). They jointly developed guidelines for the selection, recycling, and public education regarding biodegradable plastic products. So far, this partnership has made notable progress, including the establishment of standards for green plastics, the formulation of application guidelines for degradable plastics, and positive responses from the organizing committee to proposals for using such materials in the Olympic Village and major venues.
Wang Shuxian, Vice Minister of the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee, and Yi Yi, Director of the Catering Division, confirmed that authorities are actively working to ensure that biodegradable products, such as garbage bags and laundry bags, are used in the Olympic Village. Biodegradable tableware will be implemented selectively in centralized dining areas and universally in all locations where disposable items are required. This move is part of a broader effort to reduce plastic waste and promote environmental responsibility.
According to Weng Yunxuan, Secretary General of the Degradable Plastics Professional Committee of the China Plastics Processing Industry Association, the development of biodegradable plastics has evolved significantly since the 1990s. The industry has transitioned from research and development to large-scale application, with rapid growth in production capacity and technological advancements. Moreover, China has established product standards aligned with international norms, providing a solid foundation for their use in the 2008 Olympics.
The conference was organized by the Science and Technology Committee of the 29th Olympic Games, ICS-UNIDO, the Beijing New Material Development Center, and Tsinghua University. An accompanying exhibition, the 2007 Green Materials Green Olympics International Exhibition, showcased innovations in sustainable materials during the same period.
Another key announcement revealed that over 8 million biodegradable plastic bags would be used in the Olympic Village to address environmental concerns associated with traditional plastic bags. Additionally, 400,000 black trash cans, 7.5 million white plastic bags in athlete rooms, and 200,000 medical yellow plastic bags were planned to be made from degradable materials. The Beijing Olympic Committee also encouraged commercial service providers in the village to adopt biodegradable plastic bags, and even souvenir bags were set to use environmentally friendly materials. These measures reflected a comprehensive commitment to sustainability throughout the Games.
