Herzogenaurach – In a significant move approved by the Antitrust Commission, the Schaeffler Group finalized the acquisition of Raybestos, a leading manufacturer of clutch friction discs, on February 29, 2008. The deal was announced in late January, with Rebesto, the global leader in clutch friction lining production, as the seller. This strategic acquisition strengthens Schaeffler’s position in advanced friction technology and expands its product portfolio, opening up new avenues for growth.
Notably, the transaction includes Raybestos Industrieprodukte GmbH in Morbach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, and Raybestos Friction Products Ltd. in Suzhou, China. Both companies are subsidiaries of American Ray-tech Corporation and employ around 550 people globally. In fiscal year 2007, they generated sales of approximately 50 million euros. The acquisition also includes all employees, such as managing director Alfred Klee, ensuring continuity and stability.
This move comes at a time when LuK, a key brand under the Schaeffler Group, has been actively innovating in clutch technologies, including dry dual-clutch systems and traditional automatic transmissions. With rising engine power and growing demand for friction materials, these advancements offer fuel efficiency improvements of up to two percentage points.
LuK is one of the world’s top clutch brands, with a quarter of all vehicles worldwide equipped with its components. Its products, along with those of Rebesto, are widely used by major automotive manufacturers across the globe.
As a leading supplier of automotive components and rolling bearings, the Schaeffler Group operates through three major brands: INA, FAG, and LuK. With over 180 branches in more than 50 countries, the company reported total sales of 8.9 billion euros in fiscal 2007. This acquisition marks another milestone in Schaeffler’s ongoing efforts to expand its technological leadership and market presence.
