Dongfeng and Cummins develop a new generation of 13-liter heavy-duty truck engine

Dongfeng Motor and Cummins recently announced in Beijing that they have officially launched a collaborative project to develop a new generation of 13-liter heavy-duty truck engines. The partnership aims to target the premium segment of China's heavy truck market while also addressing global demand. This joint venture marks a significant shift in how Sino-foreign collaborations approach engine development, with a focus on innovation and efficiency. The project is being led by Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co., Ltd., a joint venture between the two companies, and will be supported by the East Asia R&D Center, which works closely with Cummins' global research network. Zhu Fushou, General Manager of Dongfeng Motor, emphasized that the new 13-liter engine platform will be entirely developed with independent intellectual property rights. The fully electronically controlled 13-liter diesel engine is expected to launch in 2009, offering power outputs ranging from 400 to 545 horsepower. It will be suitable for heavy trucks weighing over 40 tons, making it ideal for long-haul and high-load applications. Designed to meet the highest emission standards, the engine is capable of complying with both Euro III and Euro IV regulations, as well as the U.S. EPA 2007 standards. Moreover, the platform is built with future upgrades in mind, allowing for seamless compliance with Euro V and EPA 2010 requirements. This flexibility ensures the engine remains competitive in an evolving regulatory landscape. This collaboration not only highlights the technological strengths of both companies but also demonstrates their commitment to delivering advanced, environmentally friendly solutions for the global transportation industry.
