Dongfeng Motor and Cummins recently announced in Beijing that they have launched a joint development project for a new generation of 13-liter heavy-duty truck engines. The collaboration aims to target the high-end segment of China's heavy truck market, while also addressing global demand. This partnership represents a significant step forward in Sino-foreign automotive cooperation.
According to reports, the development of this new engine marks a departure from traditional models of technology transfer in joint ventures. The project is led by Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co., Ltd., a joint venture between Cummins and Dongfeng Motor. The research and development is conducted at the East Asia R&D Center, supported by Cummins' global network of innovation and engineering expertise.
Zhu Fushou, General Manager of Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd., emphasized that the new 13-liter engine platform will be entirely owned by Dongfeng Cummins, with full independent intellectual property rights. The fully electronically controlled diesel engine is expected to launch in 2009, offering power outputs ranging from 400 to 545 horsepower. It will be designed for heavy trucks with a gross weight exceeding 40 tons, making it ideal for long-haul and high-performance applications.
The project leverages Cummins’ advanced engine technology, focusing on meeting both Chinese and international market requirements. The 13-liter engine is engineered to comply with two of the world’s most stringent emission standards: the European Euro III and Euro IV regulations, as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2007 standard. Additionally, the engine platform is designed with future upgrades in mind, allowing it to meet even stricter Euro V and EPA 2010 emissions regulations in the coming years.
This initiative not only strengthens the technical capabilities of both companies but also highlights their shared commitment to sustainability, performance, and innovation in the global commercial vehicle industry.
