The partnership between Anhui Jianghuai Automobile (JAC) and South Korea's Hyundai Motor in the commercial vehicle sector has entered a highly dynamic phase. At the Beijing International Auto Show, JAC and Hyundai jointly showcased their latest innovations, including classic passenger cars and heavy trucks, signaling a new era of collaboration. This joint display marked a historic milestone, as it was the first time both companies presented their products together at an international event. The collaboration highlights the deepening relationship between JAC and Hyundai, with the latter relying on JAC’s strong market presence and technical expertise.
On June 15, 2004, JAC and Hyundai held a press conference at the Great Wall Hotel, reiterating their strong cooperative bond. Their partnership, which began in 1998 with the modern passenger car project and expanded to heavy truck development in 2002, became one of the most successful and sincere collaborations in China. Within just four years, they completed three major projects, showcasing the effectiveness of their strategic alliance. JAC quickly gained traction in the domestic market, with its bus production reaching over 8,000 units in 2004, while its heavy truck project launched in 2003 made a significant impact in 2004.
In the passenger vehicle segment, JAC's Ruifeng MPV continuously upgraded its market position, becoming the top-selling MPV in China during the first quarter of 2004. These achievements strengthened Hyundai's confidence in the partnership, reinforcing its belief that combining its advanced technology with JAC’s capabilities would lead to remarkable results.
Hyundai chose JAC not only for its rapid growth but also for its proven track record in developing high-quality vehicles across various segments, from MPVs to heavy trucks. JAC’s strong position in China’s automotive industry made it a natural choice for further cooperation. The two companies’ expanding partnership plays a key role in Hyundai’s broader strategy in China and globally.
With China’s massive automobile market attracting fierce competition, Hyundai sought to solidify its position by strengthening ties with JAC. As one of China’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers, JAC sold over 100,000 units in 2004, aiming to reach 130,000–150,000 by year-end. Its success in the commercial vehicle segment made it an ideal partner for Hyundai’s ambitions in the region.
At the Beijing Auto Show, JAC and Hyundai unveiled new models, such as the A/T A90 9m and A/S 11.5m buses, which reflect their commitment to innovation. The HK6112A passenger car, developed using A/S technology, is equipped with advanced features like the D6AB diesel engine, meeting Euro III emission standards. It offers a blend of comfort, safety, and environmental efficiency, making it a strong competitor in the high-end passenger car market.
Priced significantly lower than similar domestic models, the HK6112A has been well-received by transport operators, who praise its quality and value. Industry experts have dubbed it the “new coastline†of China’s passenger car market, expecting it to drive future growth.
In the heavy truck segment, JAC and Hyundai have made impressive progress. Their joint development of the Gehlfa series, based on European technology, has led to rapid market penetration. The Geerfa heavy truck, launched in 2003, achieved quick success, demonstrating the power of their collaboration.
The new electronically controlled and eco-friendly 440 model further enhances JAC’s reputation, meeting global standards and filling a gap in China’s heavy truck market. With continued cooperation, JAC and Hyundai are set to reshape the commercial vehicle landscape in China, strengthening Hyundai’s brand image and technological influence in the region.
