Townhouse fire in St Charles General Alarm, 5-30-15

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Two individuals, including an elderly man confined to a wheelchair, were successfully rescued by firefighters from the St. Charles Fire Department after being trapped on the second floor of a burning townhome on Saturday night, according to Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet.

The fire department received the call at 11:47 p.m. for a reported fire at the 1700 block of Cumberland Green Drive in St. Charles. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy flames and smoke, with an older man unable to escape from a bedroom on the second floor. His son was seen hanging over the balcony, desperately seeking help. "Heavy smoke was pushing over him from the sliding glass doors — the father was still inside," Schelstreet explained.

Firefighters quickly deployed a portable ladder to rescue the two men. "A firefighter accessed the balcony and carried the father down the ladder," Schelstreet said. They then helped the son exit the unit safely. The operation involved coordination with firefighters from Geneva, Batavia, West Chicago, and South Elgin.

This account comes from John Tulipano:

At approximately 23:45 on May 30, 2015, St. Charles Fire Department was called to a fire at 1742 Cumberland Green. A report of people trapped prompted immediate action. Engine 102 arrived first and found heavy fire coming from the second floor of a ten-unit, two-story frame building. A person was seen hanging from the balcony, and another individual was later discovered in a wheelchair in a first-floor bedroom.

The crews worked swiftly to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjacent units. By the time I arrived, the fire was well under control. One civilian was taken to the hospital, while another was treated on-site.
