Townhouse fire in St Charles General Alarm, 5-30-15

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Two men, one of whom was confined to a wheelchair, were successfully rescued by firefighters from the St. Charles Fire Department after being trapped on the second floor of a burning townhome unit on Saturday night, according to Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet.

The emergency call came in at 11:47 p.m. to the 1700 block of Cumberland Green Drive in St. Charles. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions and found an elderly man stuck in a bedroom, unable to escape. His son was hanging over the balcony, desperately seeking help. "Heavy smoke was pushing over him from the sliding glass doors — the father was still inside the building," Schelstreet explained.

Firefighters quickly deployed a portable ladder to rescue the two men. A firefighter reached the balcony and carefully carried the father down the ladder, while another team assisted the son in exiting the unit. The operation was swift and efficient, highlighting the skill and coordination of the responding crews.

In addition to the St. Charles Fire Department, units from Geneva, Batavia, West Chicago, and South Elgin also provided support during the incident.

This account comes from John Tulipano:

At approximately 23:45 on May 30th, 2015, St. Charles firefighters were dispatched to a reported fire at 1742 Cumberland Green. There was a report of people trapped inside. Engine 102 arrived first and reported heavy fire coming from the second floor of a 10-unit, two-story frame building (a condo/apartment complex). A person was seen hanging from the balcony, and another individual was found in a wheelchair in a first-floor bedroom.

Engine 102 managed to rescue one person from the second-floor balcony. When they entered the unit, they discovered the second person in a wheelchair in a bedroom on the first floor. The fire was quickly brought under control with no spread to adjacent units. By the time I arrived, the fire was already well contained. One civilian was taken to the hospital, while the other received on-site treatment.
