An explosion at Arens Controls, located at 3602 N. Kennicott Ave. in Arlington Heights, sent shockwaves through the community this morning, killing one worker and injuring several others. The incident prompted an EMS Box Alarm to be issued, calling for additional ambulances from nearby areas including Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, Palatine, and Prospect Heights to assist with the response.
The blast occurred around 9 a.m., according to local fire officials. A machine used in the production of hybrid vehicle parts reportedly exploded, releasing chemical fumes. While the fumes were deemed not a threat to nearby residents, the force of the blast sent rocks from the roof into a nearby parking lot, damaging approximately 20 vehicles.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and found the building filled with smoke. They discovered one employee who had died in the blast. Ten individuals—seven employees and three police officers—were taken to the hospital with respiratory issues, though their injuries were not considered life-threatening. The chemical involved was a diluted form of potassium hydroxide, which can be flammable when mixed with water or other substances, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
Local media, including the Chicago Tribune, reported on the incident, highlighting the ongoing investigation and the efforts of first responders. The full article is available here, along with additional coverage from other sources.
