An explosion at Arens Controls, located at 3602 N. Kennicott Ave. in Arlington Heights, this morning resulted in the death of one worker and injuries to several others. Emergency responders were quickly dispatched, with an EMS Box Alarm activated to bring in additional ambulances from nearby areas such as Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, Palatine, and Prospect Heights to assist with the injured.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the blast occurred inside a machine that used a diluted form of potassium hydroxide, a chemical known to be potentially flammable when mixed with water or other substances. Fire officials confirmed that while the fumes did not pose a threat to nearby residents, the force of the explosion sent debris into a parking lot, damaging around 20 cars.
The explosion happened shortly after 9 a.m., and firefighters arrived to find the building filled with smoke. One employee was found dead at the scene, and ten others — seven from Arens Controls and three police officers — were treated for respiratory issues. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening.
Additional coverage of the incident is available through the Tribune and other sources. Meanwhile, local photographers captured the aftermath, including images of firefighters inspecting the roof for damage, workers waiting for instructions, and paramedics preparing patients for transport.
