Romania believes that Chinese refrigeration equipment threatens its market and environment

Ion Maracine, the general manager of Midal, a Romanian manufacturer of refrigeration equipment, recently highlighted that the Romanian refrigeration market is currently facing serious environmental challenges due to the use of non-eco-friendly refrigerants that are banned under international agreements. These harmful substances, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), are still being used in some refrigeration and air-conditioning units, especially those imported from China. The affordability of Chinese-made equipment, which is sold at very low prices, makes it highly attractive to consumers in Romania who have limited purchasing power. As a result, these products are flooding the local market, posing both environmental and regulatory concerns. China's refrigeration industry continues to rely on CFCs and other ozone-depleting substances, which are strictly prohibited by international treaties like the Montreal Protocol and the Kyoto Protocol. Romania, as a signatory to these agreements, has laws in place that ban the import of equipment using such refrigerants. However, enforcement has been weak, and illegal imports continue to undermine the country's environmental commitments. In addition to the issue of harmful refrigerants, the Romanian refrigeration market faces several other challenges. The government’s licensing system for refrigeration and air-conditioning companies is often inconsistent with EU regulations, creating confusion for businesses. There is also a requirement for workers in this sector to hold professional licenses, which adds to operational complexity. Furthermore, high tariffs and the influx of second-hand equipment further distort the market and hinder the growth of sustainable, eco-friendly solutions. According to industry experts, the refrigeration and air-conditioning market in Romania was valued at over 150 million euros in 2005. With rising demand, particularly from the retail and food sectors, the market is expected to grow significantly over the next decade. However, for this growth to be sustainable, stricter enforcement of environmental regulations and better alignment with EU standards will be essential.
