Mazda 3 reversed the market to increase production in the international market

Mazda Motor Corporation has announced plans to significantly boost the production of its popular Mazda 3 model. In response to strong global demand, the company is also increasing engine output to support both the Mazda 6 and Mazda 3, which remain its top-selling models. This decision stands in stark contrast to American automakers, who have recently announced production cuts amid sluggish market conditions. Currently, the Mazda 3 is experiencing shortages worldwide, particularly in the U.S. and Europe. In July alone, the model sold 6,706 units, and in the first seven months of this year, total sales reached 48,678 vehicles. To meet this rising demand, Mazda has decided to raise the annual production of the Mazda 3 from 250,000 to 320,000 units — a 28% increase. The expansion will take place at the reopened U2 factory in Hiroshima, which previously focused on producing the smaller Mazda 2/Demio model with an annual capacity of 236,000 units. The facility has since undergone major upgrades to accommodate larger-scale and more diverse production. Additionally, Mazda plans to increase the production of 1.8- to 2.3-liter engines used in the Mazda 6 and Mazda 3 by 30%, from 425,000 to 540,000 units starting this fall. The investment for this expansion is estimated at 5 billion yen. A Mazda spokesperson said, “The success of our Mazda 6 and Mazda 3 has driven us to increase MZR engine production.” Since its launch in 2002, the Mazda 6 has enjoyed strong sales in Europe and China, while the newly launched Mazda 3 has gained traction in Japan, the U.S., and Europe. Despite the challenging global automotive environment — where many manufacturers are struggling with high inventory levels — Mazda is taking a different approach. For instance, General Motors (GM) currently has over 1.1 million vehicles in inventory, prompting it to cut production by 5% in the third quarter and plan further reductions in the fourth. Many automakers are reducing output and offering discounts to clear stock. However, Mazda remains confident in its market position and continues to expand production, reflecting its strong performance and optimism about future demand. This move highlights not only Mazda’s confidence in its product lineup but also its ability to navigate a difficult market with strategic growth.
