Excerpts from Southern.com:
The Byron Fire Protection District recently donated a 1995 fire truck from its dive response team to the Vergennes Fire Department.Jeff Bain, a board member of the Byron Fire Protection District, made the five-hour trip to deliver the vehicle. Byron benefits from a large budget—millions of dollars—largely due to the presence of a nuclear power plant within their jurisdiction.
The Vergennes Fire Department is entirely volunteer-run, with an annual budget of just around $8,000, according to Trish Sherman, a volunteer firefighter and EMS provider who also serves as the village office manager. This new truck will be the department’s most modern vehicle, replacing older models that date back to the 1970s and 1980s. Without this generous donation, they wouldn’t have been able to afford such a critical piece of equipment.
Vergennes is a small community in Jackson County, home to about 300 residents, located roughly 20 miles north of Carbondale. The fire department covers a vast area of about 300 square miles, responding to both fires and medical emergencies. They are often the first responders for medical calls, providing initial care while waiting for paramedics from Jackson County Ambulance, which may be farther away.
The newly acquired truck will serve as a medical response unit and will be equipped with extrication tools. Currently, when responding to car accidents, the department has to send both a medical unit and a fire truck, which can be a challenge if only one volunteer is available. Now, the new vehicle allows them to handle both medical and rescue needs in one trip.
In addition to its medical capabilities, the truck features air conditioning, making it a valuable resource during hot weather. It can be used as a cooling station for firefighters at the scene of fires or other incidents.
The connection between the two departments came through Nick Dinges, owner of the Amboy-based Dinges Fire Company. While his business sells equipment to fire departments, he also frequently helps facilitate exchanges between departments that have surplus gear and those in need.
The Vergennes Fire Department currently has 10 volunteers, and the village is always seeking more help. Matt Hardwig, the assistant fire chief, has been with the department for 21 years and expressed deep gratitude for the donation. He believes the new truck will make a significant difference in their ability to serve the community effectively.
