Byron Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from theSouthern.com:

The Byron Fire Protection District recently donated a 1995 fire truck from its dive response team to the Vergennes Fire Department.

Jeff Bain, a board member of the Byron Fire Protection District, made the five-hour drive to deliver the vehicle. Byron's budget runs into the millions, largely due to the presence of a nuclear power plant in their area. This financial strength allows them to support neighboring departments like Vergennes, which relies entirely on volunteers.

Trish Sherman, a volunteer firefighter and EMS provider in Vergennes, as well as the village’s office manager, noted that the department’s annual budget is just around $8,000. The new truck will be the first major vehicle upgrade in decades—most of their current fleet dates back to the 1970s and 1980s. Without this generous donation, they wouldn’t have been able to afford such an essential piece of equipment.

Vergennes is a small community in Jackson County with about 300 residents, located roughly 20 miles north of Carbondale. The fire department serves not only the village but also a large surrounding area, covering nearly 300 square miles. They are often the first responders for medical emergencies, providing initial care before Jackson County Ambulance paramedics arrive, who may be farther away.

The newly acquired truck will serve as a mobile medical response unit and will be equipped with extrication tools. Currently, the department has to send both a medical unit and a fire truck to car accidents, which can be challenging when only one volunteer is available. With the new vehicle, they can handle more situations with fewer personnel.

The truck also features air conditioning, which is a big advantage during hot weather. It will act as a cooling station for firefighters at the scene of fires or other incidents, helping them stay comfortable and focused.

The connection between the two departments came through Nick Dinges, owner of the Amboy-based Dinges Fire Company. While his business sells equipment to fire departments, he also frequently helps facilitate exchanges between those with surplus gear and those in need.

Currently, there are 10 volunteer firefighters serving Vergennes, and the department is always looking for more help. Matt Hardwig, the assistant fire chief, has been with the department for 21 years and expressed deep gratitude for the donation. He believes the new truck will make a real difference in their ability to respond effectively and efficiently.
