I recently had the chance to update the photo history section for the Western Springs Fire Department on their official page. They’re part of MABAS Division 10, and they’ve got quite the storied past. Their fleet has included some iconic manufacturers like Ward LaFrance, FWD, Seagrave, E-ONE, American LaFrance, and Pierce. Interestingly, their vehicles started out as all-white but transitioned to white-over-red schemes starting with an American LaFrance Ladder Chief Quint in 1977. To match this new look, three of their units were repainted. These included an E-ONE from 1977, a Seagrave from 1975, and a Pierce from 1982.
One of the standout pieces in their collection is a Ward LaFrance Fireball from 1952. It’s a real beauty and a testament to how far fire departments have come in terms of design and functionality. Another highlight is their American LaFrance Ladder Chief Quint from 1977. This vehicle marked a significant shift in their aesthetic, and it was eventually sold to the Hickory Point Fire Protection District in Illinois after serving them faithfully for many years.
I’ve always found it fascinating how much history can be packed into these machines. Each piece tells its own story, whether it’s about the evolution of firefighting technology or just the pride of a community in protecting its people. The Western Springs Fire Department really embodies that spirit, and I’m glad I could help bring more attention to their impressive lineup.
