Dive response in Downers Grove 7/28/11

On July 28, 2011, around 6:40 PM, a harrowing incident unfolded at 2111 Butterfield Road in Downers Grove. A vehicle careened off the road, crossing the curb and smashing through a parkway before colliding with a bench and ultimately plunging into a nearby pond. The location, at the southwest corner of Route 56 and Interstate 355, is just past an office, hotel, and restaurant complex, making it a highly visible area. As soon as the first responding team arrived on the scene, two of its members—Tom Christianson and Andy Hoff—sprang into action. Within moments of their arrival, they located the submerged vehicle in approximately ten feet of water. To their shock, they discovered a victim outside the car but still close by. With great urgency, they managed to bring the individual to safety onshore. Unfortunately, the victim was severely injured and was quickly transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in critical condition. Attached are several images taken by Stephen Wilcox, who provided both the photos and detailed information about the incident. The first image shows the path the vehicle took as it entered the pond. The second captures the aftermath, revealing the damage sustained by the car as it struck a bench before falling into the water. The third photograph highlights the precise location where the car and victim were found, seemingly near some pontoons, roughly two-thirds of the way across the pond. The final image depicts Tom Christianson and Andy Hoff discussing the situation with fellow firefighters, emphasizing the quick and coordinated response required in such emergencies.
