Offshore air-conditioning compressor giants are making a strong push into the mainland market. Yesterday, Dongyuan Motor, the leading compressor manufacturer in Taiwan, announced that it has received approval from local authorities for a joint venture plant it established in Qingdao. The new facility, named "Qingdao Century Dongyuan Refrigeration Co., Ltd.," is partnered with Finetec Century Korea, one of South Korea's largest commercial compressor manufacturers. The two companies plan to invest approximately 116 million yuan (58 million each) to produce high-end turbo-type commercial air-conditioning compressors and coolers.
Production is expected to begin in the third quarter of this year. The joint venture will adopt a "Dongyuan + Century" dual-brand strategy, targeting markets across China—including Taiwan—as well as Southeast Asia and South Korea. This move marks a key step in Dongyuan’s broader expansion on the mainland.
Dongyuan has been actively building its presence in China for years. It already operates a commercial air-conditioning plant in Guangdong, partnered with Baocheng Group, a well-known manufacturer of large appliances. However, its primary revenue still comes from the engine business, which includes two major industrial motor factories in Wuxi and Jiangxi. In addition, the company has manufacturing bases in Nanchang and Xiamen, where it produces washing machines and LCD TVs.
The growing presence of foreign compressor giants like Dongyuan is likely to intensify competition for domestic manufacturers, particularly Huayi Compression, a leading Chinese compressor company. However, Huayi representatives have stated that their core business lies in refrigerator compressors, and they see limited direct overlap with Dongyuan’s focus on commercial units. Moreover, with Changhong Electric entering the mainstream market, some of the pressure on Huayi has eased, especially in terms of downstream partnerships.
In 2007, Huayi shipped 12.24 million units, generating total revenue of 2.8 billion yuan. As foreign players continue to expand, the Chinese compressor industry is set for a more competitive and dynamic future.
