How Turbocharged Engines Work

What is Turbo

Turbo is actually an air compressor. If you see “Turbo” or “T” in the tail of a car, it means that the engine used in the car is a turbocharged engine.

The turbocharger uses the inertial impulse of the exhaust gas emitted by the engine to propel the turbine in the turbine chamber. The turbine also drives the coaxial impeller. The impeller pressures the air sent by the air filter duct to pressurize it into the cylinder. When the engine speed increases, the exhaust gas discharge speed and the turbine speed also increase at the same time, the impeller will compress more air into the cylinder, the air pressure and density increase can burn more fuel, increase the fuel amount can increase the engine's Output Power.

The biggest advantage of the turbocharger is that it can significantly increase the power and torque of the engine without increasing engine displacement. In general, the engine power and torque after installing a supercharger should be increased by 20-30%. The drawback of the turbocharger is hysteresis, which is due to inertia of the impeller reacting slowly to changes in the acceleration of the throttle, increasing the engine delay or reducing the output power. This is an irritating feeling for a car that suddenly accelerates or overtakes, but the engine's power is significantly better than that of an ordinary engine after speedup.

Daily maintenance is very particular about

Because of the special nature of turbocharged engines, it has determined that its use of oil products has very strict requirements. This is mainly to prevent the oil from being of poor quality and causing excessive damage to the machine.

During use, it is often necessary to check if the seal ring of the turbocharger is sealed. If the seal ring is not sealed, exhaust gas can enter the engine lubrication system through the seal ring, soiling the oil and causing the crankcase pressure to rise rapidly. In addition, when the engine is running at a low speed, the oil is also discharged from the exhaust pipe through the seal ring or enters the combustion chamber, resulting in excess oil consumption and “burning oil”.

In maintenance, you must pay attention to the choice of oil. Due to the effect of the turbocharger, the quality and volume of air entering the combustion chamber are greatly increased, the engine structure is more compact and more reasonable, and the higher compression ratio makes the engine work more intensely and also makes the machining precision more accurate. High, assembly technology requirements are more stringent. All of these determine the high temperature, high speed, high power, high torque and low emission work characteristics of the turbocharged engine. At the same time, it also determines the internal parts of the engine to withstand higher temperatures and larger impacts and squeezes. Working conditions. Therefore, in the selection of turbocharged car engine oil, we must take into account its particularity, the use of oil must be good abrasion resistance, high temperature, high oil film strength and stability, synthetic oil or semi-synthetic motor oil can Meet this requirement. Therefore, in addition to the best use of the engine oil required by the original, you can also use synthetic oil, semi-synthetic engine oil and other high-quality lubricants.

The turbocharger exhaust gas turbine temperature is around 600 °C, often in high-speed high-temperature conditions, therefore, the parts need to be effectively cooled and lubricated. In order to obtain effective guarantees, regular maintenance and maintenance must be carried out in a timely manner. In addition to normal maintenance, the driver must also be careful, the turbocharger should always check for abnormal noise or unusual vibration, and there is no leakage of the lubrication pipe and fittings. Turbocharger rotor bearings have high precision, and the working environment during maintenance and installation is very strict. Therefore, when the turbocharger fails or is damaged, it should be repaired at a designated service station.

Driving parking

Due to the characteristics of the turbocharged engine, it is determined that vehicles equipped with such engines have certain skills in parking and driving. “This type of vehicle is not conducive to vehicle maintenance due to the impatience of a person with impatience.”

Under normal circumstances, after the car engine is started, the accelerator pedal cannot be stepped on. It should be idling for three to five minutes. This is to increase the temperature of the engine oil and improve the flow performance so that the turbocharger is fully lubricated before the engine speed can be increased and the vehicle can start driving. This point is particularly important in the winter, and at least need to idle more than 5 minutes, after starting a few hundred meters should be running at a constant speed, and then slowly increase speed.

Vehicles equipped with turbocharged engines also pay attention to parking. When the engine is running at a high speed for a long time, be sure to stop and stop immediately. This is mainly because when the engine is working, part of the oil is used to lubricate and cool the turbocharger rotor bearings. When the running engine suddenly switches off, the oil pressure drops rapidly to zero and the oil lubrication is interrupted. In this way, the heat inside the turbocharger and the high temperature of the turbocharger part of the turbocharger and the heat in the bearing support shell can not be released quickly, and the supercharger rotor still rotates under the action of inertia, which will result in a turbine The "brake" between the shaft and the shaft of the supercharger damages the bearing and the shaft.
