House fire in Wilmette, 7-30-16

Saturday afternoon brought a sudden scare to the residents of 1826 Elmwood Avenue in Wilmette when a fire broke out in their home. Larry Shapiro shared the details, starting with the initial callout for firefighters. It seems that police officers were the first to arrive on the scene and promptly reported visible smoke coming from the house. By the time the fire department's units arrived, the situation had been escalated to a Code 4, indicating an active fire. Upon arrival, the Wilmette firefighters quickly assessed the situation. They discovered that the residents had already safely evacuated the building. A team was immediately dispatched to the second floor, where they encountered drapes on fire. Although the flames were initially small, the entire house was filled with thick smoke. Meanwhile, Winnetka firefighters sprang into action and successfully rescued a distressed cat. The feline was administered oxygen on-site and then transported to a nearby veterinary clinic by Wilmette police officers. Unfortunately, one of the elderly residents sustained a minor burn on their hand. Both individuals were promptly taken to Skokie Hospital for further evaluation and care. Thanks to the swift response of the firefighters, the blaze was extinguished relatively quickly. As the situation stabilized, several mutual aid companies, including those from Winnetka, Glenview, Skokie, Northfield, Evanston, and Glencoe, were eventually stood down and returned to their respective stations. The firefighting effort involved a variety of apparatus, including Wilmette's Battalion 26, Tower 26, Engine 27, and both Ambulances 26 and 27. Mutual aid support came from Winnetka Engine 28, Glenview Engine 13, Skokie Squad 18, Northfield Truck 29, Evanston Truck 23, and Glencoe Ambulance 30. As I scrolled through the accompanying photos provided by Larry Shapiro, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the dedication of these firefighters who work tirelessly to protect our communities. One image showed a firefighter crawling into the smoky house, another captured the moment a paramedic tended to a fire victim, and yet another depicted the successful rescue of the cat. These images truly highlight the bravery and compassion displayed by emergency responders during such challenging situations. It’s moments like these that remind us how fortunate we are to have such skilled professionals ready to act in times of crisis. The quick response and effective teamwork between departments ensured that this incident ended without any major injuries or loss of life, which is always the top priority in any emergency scenario.
