Firefighters file suit in Riverside

I just read an interesting story on MySuburbanlife.com about a legal battle involving some firefighters from Riverside. Apparently, four of them—Firefighter A.J. Ruska, Lieutenant Thomas Bensfield, Lieutenant William Ruska, and Lieutenant Ray Williamson—are taking their case to the Cook County Circuit Court. They're challenging a disciplinary decision made following an incident that happened after a holiday party at a local bar back in December. The gist of their complaint is that they were penalized for something they claim wasn't really work-related. According to the suit, these guys were simply unwinding at the Sweet Spot, a place on Desplaines Avenue in North Riverside, when one of them allegedly got into an inappropriate situation with another customer. Things escalated quickly, leading to an altercation. As a result, Lieutenant Bensfield, Lieutenant Williamson, and Lieutenant Ruska were slapped with three-day suspensions for not stepping in. But it gets more complicated. Firefighter A.J. Ruska ended up facing harsher consequences—he got hit with both a 21-day suspension for misconduct and a separate three-day penalty later on. The lawsuit argues that this punishment was unfair, especially since another firefighter who had a DUI conviction didn’t face such severe repercussions. What's more, the firefighters claim they weren’t allowed to have legal representation during their disciplinary hearings. They’re now asking the court to overturn the penalties, get compensated for lost pay, cover their lawyer costs, and even invalidate parts of the village’s code of conduct. This whole thing seems pretty serious, and I can only imagine how stressful it must be for these guys to deal with both public scrutiny and professional fallout. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out in court!
