Dive response in Downers Grove 7/28/11

Stephen Wilcox sent in some photos and details about a dive rescue that happened in Downers Grove on July 28, 2011. Here’s what went down: The incident occurred at around 6:40 PM on July 28, 2011, at the intersection of 2111 Butterfield Road (Route 56) in Downers Grove. A vehicle somehow left the road and ended up in a pond right in front of an office, hotel, and restaurant complex located at the southwest corner of Route 56 and Interstate 355. As soon as the first emergency services arrived, two members of the team jumped into action almost immediately. Tom Christianson and Andy Hoff were the ones who made the initial entry. They discovered a person trapped outside but still close to the submerged car, which was in approximately ten feet of water. They quickly pulled the victim to safety and brought them to the shore. The victim was then rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital in critical condition. Attached are some images taken by Stephen Wilcox. The first one shows the path the car took as it entered the pond. You can see how it managed to travel over the curb and the parkway, even knocking over a bench before finally falling into the water. The second image captures the moment when the car hit the edge of the pond and came to rest, with what appears to be pontoons nearby, indicating it was roughly two-thirds of the way across the lake. The third picture highlights the teamwork involved, showing Tom Christianson and Andy Hoff communicating vital information to their fellow firefighters. Lastly, there’s another shot capturing the scene from a different angle, giving a better view of the location where the rescue took place. I’ve been following this story closely since it unfolded, and it’s always fascinating to see how quick thinking and coordination among emergency responders can make such a huge difference in situations like these. It’s a reminder of the importance of having trained professionals ready to act swiftly in emergencies.
