CFD Still & Box Alarm on Irving Park Road 4-11-11

This afternoon in Chicago, crews responded to a commercial structure fire at 2543 W. Irving Park Road, located just west of Western Avenue. The building, which used to house Illinois Battery Mfg., was engulfed in flames, sending thick plumes of black smoke billowing high into the sky, visible from miles away. Fortunately, the first-floor commercial space was unoccupied, but the second-floor apartment was reportedly inhabited. The Chicago Tribune briefly covered the incident [here]. Luckily, there were no reported injuries, though a Level I Haz Mat response was initiated due to concerns about the materials inside the building. As the fire raged, Tower Ladder 21 and Squad 2 utilized elevated master streams to combat the blaze. Interestingly, Tower Ladder 23 was on standby in Sector 3 but ultimately wasn’t needed. After the bulk of the fire was brought under control, Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro arrived on the scene to document the aftermath. Tim’s gallery can be viewed [here], Steve’s gallery is available [here], and Larry’s photos are posted [here]. The firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames, with images showing them scaling ladders and deploying powerful streams of water to douse the inferno. One particularly striking photo captures firefighters in the platform of Tower Ladder 21 directing water into the building. Another image shows a member of Squad 2 perched on a ladder, working in a second-floor window despite poor visibility conditions. In another dramatic shot, a firefighter from Squad 2 is seen standing amidst dense smoke escaping from the second floor. A different photo highlights Engine 56, one of four engines present at the scene, as it contributed to the firefighting efforts. Meanwhile, Tower Ladder 23 remained parked and ready to deploy but was never called into action. Throughout the operation, the coordination among various units was evident, with multiple sectors being activated to ensure a swift and effective response. Despite the intensity of the situation, the firefighters managed to keep everyone safe, including the occupant of the second-floor apartment. For those interested in more visuals, Steve also shared a short video capturing parts of the firefighting process. This event serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication shown by Chicago’s firefighters every day.
