CFD Rescue Vac goes in service

Last December 6th, the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) announced a significant addition to its Special Operations Division. They introduced Rescue Vac Unit 5-2-4, a new asset aimed at enhancing their capabilities in critical rescue operations. This unit, stationed at the Special Operations facility located at 39th and Honore streets, is essentially an X-Streets and Sanitation sewer vac truck that many might recall seeing last summer at the International Fire Chief’s Association trade show held at McCormick Place. Built on an LN Series Ford chassis, it underwent extensive modifications by Rescue Vac Systems, a local company specializing in upgrading equipment for emergency response scenarios. Unit 5-2-4 is now fully equipped to handle citywide trench rescue missions and can also support suburban trench rescues through the MABAS Box Alarm System. Its unique setup makes it a valuable asset for situations where quick and efficient access to confined spaces is crucial. Attached below are images of the unit during its unveiling last August at the Fire Rescue International Trade Show. As you can see from the photos, the vehicle has undergone quite a transformation since its days serving with the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation. These modifications reflect the dedication of both the CFD and local partners like Rescue Vac Systems to ensure that every piece of equipment is optimized for maximum effectiveness in saving lives. These updates not only improve response times but also increase safety measures for both responders and those they aim to assist. Looking forward, I hope similar innovations continue across other areas of emergency services—it truly highlights how collaboration between public entities and private companies can lead to impactful change!
