The production scale is small and the market risk is weak. It is understood that the tire industry in Shandong Province started in the 1990s. After more than 20 years of development, the production scale of the backbone enterprise is the same as that of the world's large tire company, but the production in Shandong Province. The largest Linglong tire company's overall production capacity is only 20% of Goodyear.
By the end of 2013, there were 287 tire manufacturing enterprises in Shandong Province. Among them, there are 59 radial tire enterprises, only 28 enterprises with annual production capacity of more than 1.2 million tires per year, and only 19 enterprises with annual production capacity of more than 6 million tires. There are many small businesses, small scale, low profitability, and weak ability to withstand market risks.
“In 2012, the total sales of the top 6 tire companies in Shandong Province was US$9.375 billion, which was only 1/3 of the sales of Bridgestone, Michelin and other companies. To this end, Shandong Province Leading Triangle, Linglong, Double Star, Sailun Group (Jinyu), Xingyuan, Shengtai, Hengfeng and other key enterprises take Bridgestone and Michelin as benchmarks, through technology upgrades, integration of resources, and strengthening of supporting facilities. However, the development of the tire industry in Shandong Province started late, no matter the product grade or brand awareness is lower than the world's large tire companies.
“Shandong has no domestic tire enterprises that can support the medium and high-end international car brands of more than 200,000 yuan. The car radial tires are mainly used to replace the market. There are only two enterprises in the agricultural radial tire province, namely, Linglong and Mg. It is in the research and development stage. Compared with Michelin and Bridgestone, there is still a certain gap in the quality and performance of Shandong tire products. Zhang Hongmin said.
“As a professional automotive accessory product, ordinary consumers cannot accurately distinguish the performance of the tire. The purchase behavior is greatly influenced by the brand. Take the tire products exported to the US in 2013 as an example, the price is only 80% of the average price of the US tire market. %, the brand plays a decisive role in the market share of tires and product prices. Weakly independent innovation in science and technology research and development needs to increase investment in science and technology research and development, resulting in weak innovation ability is another shortcoming of the healthy development of the tire industry in Shandong Province. According to statistics, although some key enterprises' R&D investment accounts for 2% to 3% of sales revenue, the actual investment is only about 0.5 billion US dollars. Michelin's R&D investment accounts for more than 3% of sales revenue, with an investment of more than US$800 million.
Insufficient innovation capacity is directly reflected in the number of R&D achievements. Taking the number of invention patent applications as an example, as of the end of 2013, Michelin and Bridgestone applied for more than 600 invention patents in China, while the top five enterprises in Shandong Province had a total of only 119.

His words represent the status quo of many companies. The shortage of funds has become another bottleneck restricting innovation and development. In order to change this situation, Shandong Province relies on Qingdao University of Science and Technology and the National Rubber and Tire Engineering Technology Center to strengthen the research and development of new technologies and new processes, and continuously improve the passenger radial tires, light-weight radial tires, radial tires and engineering radial tires. And other product performance indicators, and rely on the triangle, Linglong, Sailun Group (Jinyu), Double Star and other key enterprises to develop and produce high-end varieties such as safety tires and smart tires.

At present, there are 55 professional tire testing sites built around the world. Large foreign tire manufacturers have built their own tire testing grounds, including 7 Michelin, 11 Bridgestone, 6 Goodyear, and 3 Pirelli.
