Auto parts companies test water remanufacturing

"The concept of 'remanufacturing green wealth' is truly eye-opening," said Zhang Boshun, secretary-general of the China-ASIA Market Trade Committee. He emphasized that remanufacturing auto parts is a crucial step for the automotive industry to build a circular economy. This idea first gained attention at the "07 China Auto Parts Industry Annual Conference and the Second China Automotive Summit Forum" in Wuhan from September 1st to 3rd. At the event, officials from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers introduced the concept of "Remanufacturing and Creating Green Wealth." Later, during the 2007 China Automotive Industry Development International Forum in Tianjin, Dong Yang, executive vice president of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, reiterated that auto parts remanufacturing is a key strategy for advancing a circular economy. According to statistics from the China National Automobile Association, car ownership in China continues to rise rapidly. By 2010, the target was expected to reach 55 million vehicles (excluding three-wheeled vehicles and low-speed trucks), with an average annual growth of 14.81%. If 5% to 7% of cars are retired each year, this would provide a significant supply of used parts for remanufacturing. Government officials have shown growing interest in remanufacturing. In April 2006 and June 2007, Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan expressed support for using auto parts as a pilot for the remanufacturing industry, calling for technological development and regulatory improvements. The Ministry of Communications issued Order No. 7 in 2006, allowing repair companies to use remanufactured parts. Meanwhile, the National Development and Reform Commission tasked the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers with researching the development of steam parts remanufacturing. The early pioneers in the remanufacturing sector include Baike (Changshu) Motor Co., Ltd., which started producing automobile generators in 1986 and later launched a remanufacturing supermarket in Beijing. Other companies like Jinan CNHTC Fuqiang Power, Shanghai Volkswagen Rebjet Powertrain, Caterpillar Remanufacturing (Shanghai), and Guangzhou Huadu Global Automatic Transmission have also entered the market. Globally, the remanufacturing industry reached over $100 billion in output value in 2005, with the U.S. leading at more than $75 billion. Auto parts such as engines, transmissions, and starters are commonly remanufactured. For example, Volkswagen has rebuilt 7.48 million engines since 1947, saving millions of tons of steel and aluminum and significantly reducing carbon emissions. Despite its potential, remanufacturing in China still faces challenges. Zhang Boshun pointed out that one major obstacle is public perception—some people believe remanufactured products are inferior to new ones. Additionally, outdated regulations restrict the availability of used parts, making it hard for remanufacturers to access materials. Changing these laws is essential to promote industry growth. As the demand for sustainable practices grows, the future of auto parts remanufacturing looks promising. With government support, improved regulations, and increasing consumer awareness, the industry is poised for long-term success.
