AkzoNobel launches UK R&D lab

On June 8th, AkzoNobel's fire retardant coating laboratory in Felling, England, was officially launched. The investment of the laboratory reached 7 million euros, which is the company's local investment in research and innovation and investment of 10 million euros. In the first part, the entire project will create 40 new jobs for the local area.
The fire retardant coating laboratory will be operated by AkzoNobel's Marine and Protective Coatings business unit, which is widely used in building protection, steel structures for oil and gas facilities, and is second to none in the industry. Due to the increasingly stringent regulations on fire protection around the world, the global protective coatings market is booming and its demand is expected to double by 2018.
Graeme Armstrong, a member of AkzoNobel's management and innovation management committee, said: "This modern facility will help the company drive innovation and introduce advanced coating technology to meet the needs of our customers. We are here to experiment The room is equipped with different levels of fire testing to simulate the various fires that our paints may encounter, ensuring that customers have access to proven, technologically advanced solutions with practical commercial value."
BobTaylor, Managing Director of AkzoNobel's Marine and Protective Coatings Business Unit, said: "This investment initiative has enabled the company to have a global center of excellence for fire protection technology development that will help us launch new fire protection products for the market. The fire protection product lineup is strong, providing protection for major buildings around the world, including Melbourne Airport in Australia and the New York Times Building in Manhattan, New York City."
AkzoNobel's plant in Felling, England, has more than 950 employees, and it has embarked on a series of investments in R&D and innovation. The fire protection technology laboratory is the latest project. At the beginning of this year, AkzoNobel set up a research and development laboratory for powder coating polymers with a total investment of 2 million euros and a research and development laboratory for 1.4 million euros.
