China's Oil Independently Innovates Its Oil Equipment Manufacturing Capacity
In a report released on January 6th, the equipment manufacturing branch of a major Chinese group company revealed that China's petroleum equipment manufacturing industry experienced a significant surge in sales revenue in 2008, reaching record levels. Over the years, Chinese oil equipment manufacturers have made remarkable progress through independent innovation, developing advanced technologies such as 12,000-meter drilling rigs and dual-fuel engines that now match global standards. This development has dramatically transformed the industry, moving it away from a reliance on imported equipment that was common in the early days of China's economic reforms.
Looking back over the past three decades, the industry has followed a path of technology introduction, absorption, and innovation. In the 1980s, under the "100 million-ton crude oil contract" policy, technological advancements accelerated, boosting the growth of the petroleum equipment sector. Companies actively partnered with foreign firms to produce specialized equipment like numerical control logging tools and seismic data acquisition systems, while also absorbing and improving upon foreign technologies to enhance their own R&D capabilities.
During this period, numerous key oil equipment items were developed independently, including digital seismographs, geophones, various types of drilling rigs, and high-power diesel engines. These developments significantly accelerated the localization of petroleum equipment. By 1998, the industry had produced approximately 1,040 specialized oil equipment units, with quality improvements reaching around 85%. Twenty-four products won national gold and silver awards, while 225 others received provincial and ministerial quality recognition. Many of these new products filled domestic gaps and replaced previously imported items.
The export of petroleum equipment saw a breakthrough in 1992, and by 1998, over 90 products had been exported to 36 countries and regions, generating more than $720 million in foreign exchange. In the new century, rising international oil prices and increased investment created a golden era for the industry. PetroChina’s equipment manufacturers focused on advanced technologies and ramped up R&D efforts.
Companies like Gemstone Machinery localized 5,000-meter, 7,000-meter, 9,000-meter, and 12,000-meter electric drive and composite drive rigs. Jichai’s long-stroke, high-reliability engines and dual-fuel engines reached world-class standards. The Beijing Petroleum Machinery Plant introduced advanced top-drilling rigs, which are now exported to the U.S. and other markets. Meanwhile, pipe-making companies successfully developed X70 large-diameter welded steel pipes, supporting major projects like the West-East Gas Pipeline and laying the groundwork for X80 pipe production.
The successful development of EILog logging equipment and CGDS-I near-bit geosteering systems brought China’s technology closer to international standards. These high-end, independently developed products have significantly boosted the industry’s competitiveness, allowing its market share to grow steadily and driving output value to higher levels. Within just seven years, sales revenue jumped from 5.1 billion yuan in 2001 to over 40 billion yuan in 2008, marking a remarkable transformation in China’s oil equipment manufacturing sector.
