A fisherman from Wonder Lake, Justin Ribar, 29, tragically lost his life after falling through the ice in Pistakee Bay on Friday evening. The McHenry County authorities confirmed that his body was recovered early Saturday morning, bringing an end to the search efforts.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m., when a lakefront homeowner reported hearing cries for help from the bay. Although the person wasn’t seen, the distress calls were enough to prompt an immediate response from local emergency services. Firefighters and divers used air boats to navigate across the icy surface, searching for any signs of the missing angler.
During the operation, rescuers found a glove, a boot, and some fishing equipment near an area where the ice had been broken. These clues helped confirm the location of the accident. Justin Ribar was later pronounced dead at 11:12 a.m. on Saturday. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
Tim Olk captured several powerful images of the recovery mission, showing the dedication of the firefighters and divers as they worked in challenging conditions. Air boats played a critical role in transporting personnel and equipment to the site, while teams on the shore coordinated the effort.
The NW Herald covered the story, highlighting the dangers of ice fishing and the importance of safety precautions during winter months. Local residents expressed their condolences, remembering Ribar as a regular visitor to the area who enjoyed the peaceful surroundings of Pistakee Bay.
