Application
A tree chipper or woodchipper is a machine used to break down wood—typically branches or trunks—into smaller wood chips. These machines are often portable, mounted on wheels for easy transport behind trucks or vans. They are powered by internal combustion engines ranging from 3 horsepower (2.2 kW) up to 1,000 horsepower (750 kW). Some high-power models are installed on trucks and use a separate engine, often equipped with a hydraulic crane.
The structure of a tree chipper usually includes a hopper with a collar, the chipper mechanism, and an optional collection bin. A branch is inserted into the hopper, where the collar acts as a safety feature to prevent body parts from coming into contact with the blades. The chips exit through a chute and can be directed into a truck container or spread on the ground. Typical chip size ranges from 1 inch (2.5 cm) to 2 inches (5.1 cm), making them suitable for mulching, composting, or paper production. Most chippers use energy stored in a heavy flywheel to operate efficiently.
