One hurt at Schaumburg 2-11 fire in a 7-story apartment building

The Schaumburg Fire Department was alerted to an automatic fire alarm before 6 AM on Saturday, followed by multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting smoke at 1234 Valley Lake Drive. Engine 54 arrived first and connected to the standpipe system. Firefighters discovered residents in the lobby and on upper-floor balconies of the seven-story building. Upon reaching the fire floor, they encountered heavy smoke and had to locate the exact unit that was on fire. An 85-year-old resident of the affected apartment suffered second-degree burns to her chest and was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates before being transferred to Loyola University Hospital’s burn center for further treatment. Two hose lines were deployed, allowing crews to contain the fire within the unit of origin. The incident escalated to a 2-11 alarm, with additional ambulances dispatched as a precaution. Firefighters rescued several residents who had taken refuge on their balconies to escape the smoke. Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene and captured several images. His photos show Engine 52 arriving with Ambulance 52, Battalion 5, and Truck 52. Additional equipment was brought into the building, and firefighters worked to control the blaze. The fire originated on the fourth floor, on the rear side of the structure. Investigators examined the unit before firefighters completed the overhaul. Some firefighters rested on the seventh-floor balcony after conducting a secondary search. Firefighters from mutual aid companies included units from Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, Itasca, Mount Prospect, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Palatine Rural, Buffalo Grove, Barrington, and Bloomingdale. Ambulances came from Hoffman Estates, Arlington Heights, Roselle, Bensenville, Wheeling, and Glenside. Chief officers from Arlington Heights, Palatine Rural, and Itasca also responded. Several images from Larry Shapiro highlight the response, including Engine 54 charging the standpipe, a broken water pipe causing flooding near the pump room, and ambulances staging nearby. Box alarms and second-alarm companies were staged on Valley Lake Drive. Firefighters checked their gear after exiting the building. The Chicago Tribune reported that the woman, considered critical, was later transferred to Loyola due to the severity of her injuries. Firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading beyond the fourth floor, though 15 apartments there were damaged and residents were temporarily relocated by the Red Cross.
