Early Spring Season Fertilizing Material Technology

The saying "planting in spring and catching fertilizer" originates from farmers in Anhui Province, reflecting the traditional practice of applying fertilizers to wheat and rapeseed when spring begins. But what is the science behind this agricultural custom? Is it applicable across different regions like South China or Northeast China? Professor Cao Yiping, an expert in soil and fertilization from China Agricultural University, provided a detailed explanation of the phenological features of the "Lichun" (Start of Spring) solar term and offered guidance on current fertilization practices. This year, the Lunar New Year fell on a particularly early date, with Lichun occurring at 0:52 on February 4, 2009—the first day of the Year of the Ox. From a meteorological perspective, the Start of Spring marks the gradual thawing of the earth and the arrival of warmer weather. However, due to China's vast territory and diverse climate, the timing and conditions for agricultural activities must be adjusted accordingly. Another important factor during the Start of Spring is moisture. Precipitation varies significantly across the country. In northern regions, the area remains dry, with little rainfall throughout the year. This year, the situation has been even more severe, as rising temperatures increase soil evapotranspiration, worsening drought conditions. In the Yellow River Basin, precipitation typically ranges around 5mm, while southern regions receive between 5-50mm. In major winter wheat areas, temperatures have risen after the start of spring, causing the 0°C isotherm to shift northward. However, rainfall levels have remained relatively stable, and windier conditions have accelerated soil erosion, making spring droughts still a major issue in North China. As the earth reawakens, dormant plants begin to grow, and the soil thaws. Farmers are busy preparing for the season, knowing that “Spring is the most precious time of the year,” and “A day in spring is worth a golden ingot.” It’s essential not to waste this critical period. However, managing agricultural tasks isn’t static; it requires careful analysis and adjustment based on local temperature and precipitation patterns. Professor Cao Yiping suggested several tailored recommendations for different regions regarding the practice of “planting in spring and catching fertilizer”: In northern greenhouses, fertilization should follow harvesting. Use nitrogen and potassium fertilizers in small amounts—too much can burn young plants. In central and southern Henan Province, where winter wheat is grown, farmers should press the topsoil immediately after it thaws to protect the crop. If irrigation is available, apply ammonium bicarbonate for the first round of fertilization. In the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, crops like rapeseed and wheat require timely fertilization. Nitrogen-based fertilizers are typically used, and if base fertilizers were not properly applied with compound or organic materials, potassium should also be added. Combining nitrogen and potassium improves results. Whether using urea or ammonium bicarbonate, avoid leaving them exposed on the surface to prevent loss due to evaporation. Fruit trees in this region also benefit from fertilization. In South China and Hainan, the Start of Spring marks a crucial time for rice paddies and tropical crops such as bananas, mangoes, litchi, longan, pineapples, and peppers. These crops enter their active growth phase, requiring additional nutrients. Fertilization should focus on solid nitrogen and potassium fertilizers. However, some farmers mistakenly dissolve solid phosphorus or triple superphosphate into water and spray it, which is inefficient and leads to nutrient loss. It's better to apply these fertilizers directly to the soil for maximum effectiveness.
