Downers Grove 2-11 on 7/16/11

Stephen Wilcox has shared a series of images and detailed commentary from another high-priority fire incident in Dupage County, this time at 5130 Meadow Lane in Downers Grove. The fire was reported at 4:32 p.m. on July 16, 2011. It was discovered by a jogger who noticed flames coming from the front door and immediately called 9-1-1. The area is known for its dense forestation, steep ravines, narrow roads, and limited access to visible fire hydrants—factors that significantly complicated firefighting efforts. The home in question was a three-story single-family residence measuring approximately 75 feet by 125 feet, built using ordinary construction without any fire protection features. This made it particularly vulnerable to rapid fire spread. Below are several photos taken by Stephen Wilcox during the incident: - A wide shot looking east from I-355, showing the extent of the fire. - The front driveway as he arrived, revealing the intensity of the situation. - From the second-floor rear, heavy fire and a collapsed roof were clearly visible. - A portion of the east roof was seen collapsing into the structure. - Fire was spreading rapidly, breaking through the roof from the rear. - Flames were clearly consuming the building from multiple angles. - Water supply was a major challenge, with hydrants located down a ravine, requiring a 5-inch line to be manually transported across the terrain to reach the engine. - Fire apparatus had limited positioning options, with only one unit actually on-site. - As the fire continued, temperatures and humidity rose, and smoke settled close to the ground, creating hazardous conditions for firefighters. This fire highlights the challenges faced by emergency responders in rural and densely wooded areas, where access and water supply can be major obstacles.
